Malaysia Public Holidays 2026 & 2027

Holidays in Malaysia are not the same in every state — Sarawak has Gawai, Sabah has Kaamatan, and four states do not even share the same weekend. Pick your state and see exactly what you get, and which leave days are worth spending.

Check before you book anything. Malaysian holiday dates can and do move. Islamic dates depend on the moon sighting announced by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, state rulers occasionally change their official birthdays, and the Prime Minister sometimes declares extra holidays at short notice. Anything marked Tentative below is our best estimate, not a gazetted date. Before you book flights, sign a contract or publish a company holiday calendar, confirm against your own state's official gazette (warta kerajaan negeri) and the federal circular on jpa.gov.my.

How this is calculated

Malaysia does not have one holiday calendar. It has seventeen — a federal one and one for each state and federal territory — and they overlap without ever quite matching. That is why a Selangor office can be closed on a day a Kelantan office is open, and why the total number of paid holidays ranges from about 19 days to more than 22 depending on where you sit.

Where the dates actually come from

Federal public holidays are declared under section 8 of the Holidays Act 1951 and published in the federal gazette. Each state then declares its own list under its own state enactment, published in the warta kerajaan negeri. A state can adopt a federal holiday, decline it, or add one of its own. Nothing forces the lists to agree, so they do not.

Separately, the Employment Act 1955 (section 60D) sets the floor for private-sector employees: at least 11 paid public holidays a year, of which five are compulsory — National Day, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's Birthday, the state Ruler's or Governor's Birthday (or Federal Territory Day if you are in KL, Labuan or Putrajaya), Labour Day and Malaysia Day. Your employer picks the other six from the gazetted state list. So a long list here does not automatically mean you personally get all of them — it means those days are gazetted in your state.

Why the same festival is a holiday in one state and not the next

  • Thaipusam is gazetted in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Kedah declares it year by year as an occasional holiday rather than gazetting it permanently, which is why it appears and disappears.
  • Nuzul Al-Quran is observed in most states but not in Johor, Kedah, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Sabah or Sarawak.
  • Good Friday is a public holiday only in Sabah and Sarawak, reflecting their much larger Christian populations. Sabah adds Christmas Eve on top.
  • Hari Gawai (1–2 June) belongs to Sarawak; Pesta Kaamatan, the harvest festival, belongs to Sabah and Labuan (30–31 May). Neither is observed in the peninsula.
  • Deepavali is national except in Sarawak.
  • New Year's Day is not a holiday in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis or Terengganu.
  • Every state observes its own Ruler's or Governor's birthday, and these move: some are fixed calendar dates (Melaka 24 August, Terengganu 26 April), some are a fixed weekday (Perak takes the first Friday of November, Pulau Pinang the second Saturday of July), and Johor's Hari Hol follows the Islamic calendar so it slides about eleven days earlier each year.

The Friday–Saturday weekend

Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu run a Friday–Saturday weekend for state government offices and most local businesses. The rest of the country runs Saturday–Sunday. This changes the arithmetic in both directions: in those four states a holiday falling on a Sunday is a real day off and needs no replacement, while a holiday falling on Friday or Saturday is the one that gets pushed. That is why you will see a Labour Day replacement on a Sunday in Kedah while everywhere else ignores it, and why those four states are usually excluded from the Monday replacement days that follow a Sunday festival elsewhere.

When a gazetted holiday falls on a weekly rest day, section 60D(1A) of the Employment Act entitles the employee to a replacement day. In practice the state gazette names it, and if the obvious replacement day is already a holiday it rolls forward again — which is how Wesak Day on Sunday 31 May 2026 ends up being observed on Tuesday 2 June in most states and Wednesday 3 June in Sarawak, where Monday and Tuesday are already taken by Gawai.

The moon-dependent dates

Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya Haji, Awal Muharram, Maulidur Rasul, Israk and Mikraj, Awal Ramadan and Nuzul Al-Quran all follow the Hijri calendar and shift roughly eleven days earlier each Gregorian year. Their exact dates are not astronomical — Malaysia confirms them by physical moon sighting (rukyah) at official stations nationwide, announced by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal on behalf of the Malay Rulers. A published date can therefore move by a day right up to the eve of the festival.

Anything on this page marked Tentative has not yet been confirmed that way. We have kept those flags on rather than quietly presenting an estimate as a fact, because a one-day error in a Raya date is the difference between catching your flight and missing it.

And then there are the surprise holidays

The Prime Minister can and does declare additional public holidays at short notice — for Aidilfitri 2026, an extra day on Friday 20 March was announced only six days before the event. Sports victories, royal installations and national events have all produced same-week holidays before. No calendar, including this one, can predict those.

Frequently asked questions

How many public holidays does Malaysia have in 2026 and 2027?
There is no single national number, because every state gazettes its own list. Nationwide holidays observed in all 16 states and territories come to roughly 14–16 days, but once you add state holidays a typical peninsular state lands around 19–21 days, while Sabah and Sarawak reach 22 or more thanks to Kaamatan, Gawai, Good Friday and Christmas Eve. Select your state in the tool above and the counter shows the exact number of calendar days off for that state and year. Separately, the Employment Act 1955 guarantees private-sector employees a minimum of 11 paid public holidays, five of which are compulsory — so the gazetted count and your personal entitlement are not the same thing.
Why does the tool mark some 2027 dates as tentative?
Because they genuinely are not settled yet. Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya Haji, Awal Muharram, Maulidur Rasul, Israk and Mikraj, Awal Ramadan and Nuzul Al-Quran follow the Islamic lunar calendar, and Malaysia fixes them by physical moon sighting announced by the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, not by astronomical calculation alone. Published references frequently disagree by one day: for 2027 our main sources give Aidilfitri as 10–11 March while one gives 9 March, and Hari Raya Haji as 17 May against one source's 16 May. We show the majority date and flag it rather than pretending the disagreement does not exist. Treat any tentative date as accurate to within about one day, and re-check before booking.
How does the long weekend finder decide which leave days to suggest?
It builds a day-by-day map of the whole year for your state, marking every weekend day and every gazetted holiday as a day off — using a Friday–Saturday weekend for Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, and Saturday–Sunday everywhere else. It then finds the working-day gaps sitting between two blocks of days off, and where a gap fits inside the leave budget you set (1, 2 or 3 days), it reports the whole stretch as one continuous break. The result tells you exactly which dates to apply for and how many total days off you get in return — for example, two leave days turning a normal weekend into a nine-day run around Hari Raya. Free long weekends that need no leave at all are listed separately above the bridges.
My state has a Friday–Saturday weekend. Does that change my holidays?
Yes, in both directions. Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu treat Friday and Saturday as the weekly rest days, so Sunday is an ordinary working day there. A gazetted holiday landing on a Sunday is therefore a real extra day off in those four states and needs no replacement — which is why they are usually left out of the Monday replacement days that the rest of the country gets after a Sunday festival. Conversely, a holiday landing on a Friday or Saturday is the one that gets a replacement day, often on the following Sunday. The tool applies the correct weekend automatically once you pick your state, so the day count and the long weekend suggestions both reflect your real working week.
Can I trust these dates enough to book flights?
Use them to plan, then verify before you pay. Fixed-date holidays — Merdeka on 31 August, Malaysia Day on 16 September, Christmas, Labour Day, most Ruler birthdays — are stable and safe to work from. Chinese New Year and Deepavali are calculated well in advance and rarely move. The Islamic-calendar dates are the ones that shift, and the Prime Minister can also declare surprise holidays at a few days' notice, as happened with the extra Aidilfitri day on 20 March 2026. Before spending money, confirm against your state gazette (warta kerajaan negeri) and the federal circular published on jpa.gov.my. This tool is free general guidance, not an official source.
